Drew Brees – One of God’s “Few Good Men”

It’s the end of a great game with an amazing finish. Your favorite team AND your fantasy team BOTH won! The interviewer shoves the microphone in the face of the winning quarterback and asks him about the game winning play. You anticipate a great rah rah moment followed by high-fives all around.

But instead of talking about how great he is, your beloved superstar thanks God.

Be honest, does this reinforce your admiration for him? Or is it a pet peeve? A lot of my friends fall in the latter category. They’ll say “God doesn’t pick sides and didn’t throw that pass!” And they’re right. However, I think we’re missing something when we quickly dismiss the perspective displayed by the guy behind the microphone.

In a society that is obsessed with “success”, a champion is offering insight into what makes him tick and a look inside. But instead of appreciating the insight, we’re often overcome with our insatiable appetite for mind candy and adrenaline. What have you done for me lately?

The next time that happens, I challenge you to learn a bit more about WHY someone has decided to share their faith in such a public way. The words may be a turn-off to us when they aren’t communicated in context. And how could they be in a 5-second soundbite? So why not take the time to learn more about where they’re coming from?

The video below is an interview with Drew Brees where he talks about how he came to believe and WHY it’s important to him. Pretty cool guy if you ask me.

Is there a better way to get through to people? Maybe. What are your thoughts?
